iFixit: New MacBook Pro Still Difficult To Repair, But Still Better Than Its Forerunners

After conducting extensive research on Apple's screen cleaning cloth, iFixit has finally published

disassembled the new MacBook Pro laptop and assessed its repairability.

Verdict

In general, the new model has achievedmaintainability several steps forward from its predecessors. For example, the 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro had just 1 point from iFixit. The 2021 laptop is much easier to repair: many components are modular and can be replaced independently, including the trackpad, most I/O ports, and coolers. It's also easier to replace the battery thanks to special tabs and remove the motherboard.

However, problems and difficulties still remained. In particular, pentalobe screws, attached keyboard, glued speakers and some software barriers cause repair difficulties. For example, to replace the battery, you will have to disassemble the trackpad, the display cannot be replaced without losing True Tone, and Touch ID cannot be replaced without losing functionality.

As a result, iFixit experts gave the new MacBook Pro 4 points out of 10. Of course, this is better than 1 point, but it’s still a pretty low score.
