Illegal catch of fish tracked by satellite

A team of researchers, using satellite data and other analytical tools, identified companies

who conduct illegal fishing inthe high seas beyond national jurisdictions. The study, which appears in the journal One Earth, is the first to catch companies fishing in unregulated areas.

These results showed how exactlycommercial fishing and how much of it is legal. In the past, researchers were able to determine which countries and companies were reporting high seas fishing. They account for 60% of the world's oceans and, therefore, a significant part of the waters beyond the limits of national jurisdictions.

We have many concerns about companieswho operate on the high seas because they are outside the reach of national laws and regulations. There are many concerns about companies operating on the high seas, simply because they are outside the reach of national laws and regulations. By linking their ships with specific companies, this study is the first step towards increasing transparency in this area.

Scientists have also found that fishing in these watersled to a decline in the abundance of many species of fish in the open ocean, including several species of tuna, swordfish and marlin. Although countries report their catch of fish, many companies fish and sell fish in the world's oceans, where fishing is largely unregulated.

Korean companies Sajo Group and Dongwon, owners of the American subsidiary Starkist, along with several Chinese corporations based in Hawaii, are among the ten most active fishermen on the high seas. About 100 companies located in the United States, Great Britain, China, Taiwan, Russia, Spain, the Netherlands, South Korea and other countries were the most active in illegal fishing.
