Images of Hebrew spies found during excavations of the synagogue

Scientists have excavated part of the synagogue floor, decorated with a large mosaic panel divided into three

horizontal stripes. Each depicts an episode from the fourth chapter of the Book of Judges: the victory of Israelite troops over the Canaanite army led by the general Sisera.

Archaeologists have found the first image of biblicalheroines Deborah and Jael in Hebrew art. Also among the newly discovered mosaics are panels depicting two vases with sprouted vines. They form medallions that frame four animals feeding on grapes: hare, fox, leopard and wild boar.

The mosaic floor in the north aisle is divided into two rows of panels containing figures and inscriptions in Hebrew. After studying them, scientists understood what biblical stories are depicted on the walls.

So, on one panel two spies are depicted, sent by Moses to explore Canaan, carrying a pole with a bunch of grapes (Numbers 13:23). Another panel depicting a man leading an animal on a rope is accompanied by the inscription "a little child will lead them" (Isaiah 11:6).

Mosaic panels in the nave or main hall include an image of Noah's Ark; how Moses parted the waters of the Red Sea and how Jonah was swallowed by three fish in a row; as well as the building of the Tower of Babel.
