In October, there will be a peak in the activity of two starfalls at once. All about where and how to watch them

  • Draconians

From October 6 to October 10, the Draconid flow will begin. As they said in the Moscow planetarium, it is better

start observing on the evening of October 8, as soon as the Sun sets.

In different years, during this shower, it was possible to observe from 20 to 500 meteors per hour.

Draconid meteors are reddish and very slow, this characteristic helps to separate genuine shower meteors from random ones. During the Draconid maximum period, [the Moon] has just passed the new moon phase (10/06/2021), its light will not interfere with the observation of meteors. Draconid observation conditions are favorable.

  • Orionids

In the second half of October, on the 22nd, it will comePeak activity of the Orionids starfall. It usually takes place from October 2 to October 7. It is characterized as a shower of medium strength, so during it, about 20 meteors fly by per hour.

The meteors themselves are quite fast and often leavefootprints. They are usually white in color, but sometimes they include red, blue-green, yellow and orange meteors. On the night of the Orionid maximum, the Moon is close to the full moon phase (10/20/2021) and will significantly interfere with the observation of meteors. Therefore, the conditions for observing the Orionids in 2021 are unfavorable.
