In Russia, revealed a new strain of COVID-19 - AY.4.2

As the head of the scientific group for the development of new methods for diagnosing human diseases told the Central Research Institute

Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor Kamil Khafizov, isolated cases of transmission of the new variant of coronavirus AY.4.2 were found in Russia. It is one of about 40 subspecies of the delta strain.

The variant was first found in the UK.According to the Francois Balloux Institute of Genetics at University College London, AY.4.2 can be transmitted from person to person 10-15% faster than the previous version of the delta strain

The likelihood of its widespread distribution in the Russian Federation and inthe world is sufficient. The frequency of this subline is increasing, but experts do not believe that it is she who is responsible for the continuing large number of daily cases of coronavirus infection in various countries.

Employees of the Institute of Genetics note that the new strain can potentially spread both in Russia and in the rest of the world, and even supplant the previous version.

Yes, option AY.4.2 delta lineages are already detected in isolated cases in Russia, as follows from the results of sequencing the genomes of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus deposited in the VGARus database. AY.4.2 is one of many branches of the delta lineage, which likely has a number of advantages over the original and other versions of the pathogen.
