In the Faroe Islands, 1.5 thousand dolphins were killed. Authorities will revise hunting rules

Earlier, on September 12, 2021, a traditional hunt for Atlantic whitesides took place in the Faroe Islands

dolphins. Participants killed 1,428 individuals, a record number in history. 

In the Faroe Islands, traditional dolphin hunting has been legal since 1584, but the September 2021 slaughter was illegal and many of those involved were unlicensed. 

After the massacre, the media began to publish pictures with the corpses of animals on the beach, and among the local residents protests began and massive outrage spread throughout the world.

We take this issue very seriously.We will take a close look at the question of dolphin hunting and what role it should play in Faroese society. The government has decided to begin revising the rules for capturing Atlantic white-sided dolphins.

The government added that the incident with the killing of dolphins raised a number of important questions, including the number of individuals that are allowed to be caught at one time, and the methods of hunting them.
