Innovative geothermal installation will become the "cooler" of the planet

One of the main problems with carbon capture is that it requires energy, which

can also contribute to increased carbon emissions and therefore defeats the very purpose of carbon capture in the first place.

“Geothermal energy can providethe carbon-free electricity and heat needed to make DAC a viable means of removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere,” said Tim Latimer, CEO of Fervo Energy. "With its extensive geoscience expertise and new support from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, Fervo is well positioned to innovate in carbon removal and demonstrate a natural fit between geothermal and DAC."

The new facility will be supported by the Chan InitiativeZuckerberg, a charity founded by Priscilla Chan and her husband Mark Zuckerberg, to fight global issues ranging from climate change to eradicating disease.

“Carbon removal technologies are an importanttool to tackle climate change,” said Caitlin Fox, vice president of strategic initiatives at the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. “In order to scale carbon removal, we need to cut costs dramatically. Fervo's unique integration of next-generation geothermal technology with direct air capture creates exciting opportunities to develop thorough carbon removal at a lower cost, while providing a reliable, plentiful, carbon-free source of energy and heat.”
