Intestinal bacteria cause postoperative complications

Researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Systemic Immunology, Würzburg and Bern

Universities have found that the cause of many postoperative infections is related to intestinal bacteria that spread through the body through the bloodstream. Most often, they cause infections after liver, pancreatic and biliary tract surgeries, small intestine and colon surgeries.

Scientists analyzed the microorganisms that causedco-infections in almost four thousand patients after major operations. In almost all patients, the causative agents were not nosocomial infections, but intestinal bacteria such as enterococci (Enterococcus), Escherichia coli (Escherichia coli) and Clostridium (Clostridium).

Researchers have traced the mechanisms of infectioncontrol in healthy patients. The analysis showed that special immune cells located in the liver are responsible for controlling these spreading bacteria. They are a group of lymphocytes, innate lymphoid cells that are important participants in the innate immune system.

If bacteria from the intestines enter the liverThrough the bloodstream, innate lymphoid cells are activated and release special messenger substances that trigger and regulate immune responses.

Innate lymphatic cells located in the liver control the systemic spread of intestinal bacteria and effectively fight co-infections after surgery.

Clinics try to prevent infection afteroperations while keeping the environment as germ-free as possible. Therefore, extensive sterilization measures are taken to largely destroy microorganisms during surgery. The researchers believe that boosting immunity may be an additional strategy for conventional antimicrobial therapy. The support will help the immune cells of the liver to activate the defense and prevent the development of post-operative infections.
