Ireland will create a giant $130 million battery that will power the entire country for about 3 minutes

Irish Prime Minister Michael Martin announced the construction of a giant energy storage facility.

It is assumed that the full supply will be enough for 3-4 minutes of functioning of the entire country.

What is known

The construction of the battery is carried out within the framework ofthe Shannonbridge B program, in which $130 million will be invested. The design capacity of the energy storage will be 170 MWh. The key goal of the program is to support the generation of electricity from unstable renewable sources.

The Irish government plans to introduce storageinto operation in 2024. 150 specialists are involved in the construction. The battery storage device will receive a synchronous capacitor, which will be used to ensure a normal level of mains voltage.

For those who are not in the know

Ireland is the European leader in terms ofenergy storage capacity. According to experts from Delta-EE, by the end of 2022, the country will have 1.4 GW of installed energy storage capacity, while in the entire European Union this figure will be at the level of 5 GW. The implementation of the Shannonbridge B project will provide Ireland with an increase of 97.2 MW.
