A new large-scale review of studiesits purpose is to evaluate various statements and compile a rating. The authors analyzed existing work in 180 fields to find out how a particular risk factor, such as smoking, for example, is associated with disease.

For example, the link between smoking and lung cancer has beenawarded the highest five-star rating, as were the links between high blood pressure and heart disease. This means that the evidence is reliable and unlikely to change in the future. However, the association between eating large amounts of red meat and stroke was given only one star, indicating "no evidence of a link." The link between red meat and colon cancer, breast cancer, coronary heart disease, and diabetes received two stars.
