John Romero, founder of Id Software and designer of the original Doom, took to Reddit to answer fan questions.

According to the developer, although he remains faithful to classic games, he believes modern games are incredible.
“Gaming is incredible these days. Much better than ever. This is due not only to the graphics, but also to the way the design language has changed. The games are getting better,” John said.
The designer added that he's also happy with the Doom reboot, and the upcoming Doom Eternal won't disappoint fans either.
Moreover, Romero did not criticize modernmonetization model for games. Even more: the designer supports the idea of subscriptions, DLC and season passes, as they help improve an existing project.
