What is known

James Webb was able to photograph Saturn for the first time in the near infrared (3.23 microns). The photographs were taken by the space telescope when it is at a distance of 1.37 billion km from the planet.

The purpose of the observation, in particular, was to study the evolution of Saturn. The James Webb Space Telescope was able to demonstrate its ability to see the faint moons of the sixth planet from the Sun.

The resulting photographs allow scientists to morelearn about the rings and atmosphere of Saturn. The rings stand out against the background of the planet due to the high content of ice and due to the fact that the atmosphere absorbs infrared radiation.

It's summer in the northern hemisphere and summer in the southern hemispherewinter. For this reason, the upper part of Saturn is darker. It is also worth noting that the methane fluorescence in the atmosphere creates the effect of a light border around the planet's disk.
