Land in China drilled to a record depth

Representatives of the largest Chinese oil and gas producer PetroChina said that their oil well

Pengshen-6 reached a depth of 9,026 m. As a result, it became the deepest vertical well in Asia. This was reported by CGTN.

The record-breaking well is located in Sichuan provincein southwest China. Due to the difficult geological conditions, its construction was fraught with many risks and problems. The well had to go through ten different layers of earth. We had to work at high temperatures, pressure levels and sulfur.

Ma Yong, Deputy Director of the Engineering Departmenttechnology of southwest oil and gas company PetroChina, said the new well will support ultra-deep oil and gas exploration and lay the foundation for scientific exploration at a depth of 10,000 m. The exploration well program will begin in 2023.

The well was drilled by a subsidiary of ChinaNational Petroleum Corp in July 2021. According to the original project plan, the maximum depth was supposed to be 7,990 m. However, to further study the properties of oil and gas in the deep formation, the drilling depth was eventually increased to 9,026 m.
