Large Hadron Collider breaks its own energy record of 6.8 trillion electronvolts

After three years of maintenance and upgrades, the Large Hadron Collider has beaten its own.

record.In preparation for the third major run of experiments, the accelerator (LHC Run 3) observed the most powerful beams of protons ever created by humans. The particles raced through the 27-kilometer tunnel near Geneva, Switzerland, with an energy of 6.8 trillion electronvolts (eV).

LHC set the first record (and became the most powerfulparticle accelerator in the world) in 2009, immediately after the start of work. The proton beam was accelerated to an energy of just over 1 trillion eV, surpassing Fermilab's Tevatron accelerator near Chicago, Illinois. A year later, this figure rose to 3.5 trillion eV, and in 2015 - to 6.5 trillion eV.

This record is not the only update thatscientists at the LHC will present it in the coming weeks. Several experiments at the accelerator have significantly increased the amount of data they can collect, opening the door to new discoveries.

During the third run, each of the twoThe collider's general purpose detectors, ATLAS and CMS, will track more collisions than the first two combined. The capabilities of other tools have increased 50 times. Researchers around the world will use this data to look deeper than ever into some of the most puzzling and fundamental mysteries in physics.
