Lenovo Yoga S940 review: now not a transformer, but an image ultrabook

</ img>

When creating the Yoga line, Lenovo was guided by the idea of creating convenient multifunctional

transforming devices. This was directly hinted at by the name Yoga, and all the models in the line were truly transformable, be it a laptop or a tablet. Last year, Lenovo decided to review the entire structure of its lines and now Yoga includes not only transformers, but also “classic” devices. form factor. Moreover, the flagship “premium” Ultrabooks are also produced in this line. Today we reviewed one of these laptops, the Lenovo Yoga S940. This model is not about high performance or price/feature ratio. This is a typical fashion ultrabook with a corresponding impressive price. And we will figure out what it can offer to a potential owner.

Lenovo Yoga S940 - fashion ultraportablelaptop with a metal body of compact dimensions. Equipped with a 14-inch IPS FullHD display with thin frames around the perimeter, an owner’s face recognition system and filling familiar to this class of devices. Whiskey Lake Intel Core i5-8265U processor, 16 GB RAM, 512 GB PCIe SSD. The only ports are Type-C with support for Thunderbolt 3. They promise up to 15 hours of battery life.

What is included?

Packaging and delivery are common forLenovo laptops. A larger box with the whole kit and a smaller box with the laptop itself. The set is minimal: the laptop itself, a compact 65 W power supply, a removable power cable and documentation. Given the cost, some kind of case and Type-C dock would not be amiss:

How does the Lenovo Yoga S940 look and assemble?

</ img>

Worth giving credit to engineers, Lenovo Yoga S940It looks and feels really expensive and soundly, largely due to the use of a high-quality alloy of aluminum with a matte finish. The laptop turned out to be light: about 1.2 kg, while nothing bends anywhere, it feels monolithic. The whole body is gray, on the cover - only the logo of the Yoga line:

</ img>

The case is very thin: 12.2 mm, although this is not a record. The shape of the laptop is wedge-shaped and it is interestingly used in the design, which we will recall a little later. Like most modern ultraportable image laptops, Lenovo Yoga S940 lacks full-sized connectors. In this case, there are only four. On the right side are two USB Type-C with Thunredbolt 3 support:

</ img>

There is nothing interesting behind. The hinge occupies almost the entire width:

</ img>

On the right side there is another Type-C USB 3.1 Gen 1 for charging and a combined 3.5 mm audio jack. This is where the wired means of communication between the laptop and the outside world end:

</ img>

The front edge is made interestingly. In the middle of the end of the top cover, the company made a kind of protrusion on which the name of the series is engraved. But this thing is not only for beauty: it is convenient to use it to pry the lid of the laptop with your finger when opening it. As we remember, the profile of the laptop is wedge-shaped with a slope, thanks to this the protrusion fits into the linear dimensions of the laptop and does not “stick out”:

The stereo speakers in the laptop were marked on the sides of the keyboard unit, which is not so common in ultrabooks on Windows:

</ img>

The grids of these same speakers are also visible from below, andalso perforation of the cooling system. At the front, the laptop rests on two oblong rubberized legs. On the back there is one long one, covering most of the width of the laptop:

</ img>

Another interesting decorative element -protective display glass: it has rounded edges, like in smartphones. This has no practical benefit, but it looks very aesthetically pleasing. The frame around the perimeter of the screen is thin, which made it possible to cram a 14-inch device into a body that is more typical in size for 13.3-inch models. In addition to the webcam, there is also an infrared sensor above the screen for recognizing the owner by face and operating the Glance software. It tracks eye movements using an IR camera and can do a couple of useful things. For example, automatically lock your laptop if you get up from your desk. Or move program windows between connected screens by looking at the desired panel. It was not possible to check the latter: there was no monitor with Thunderbolt at hand.

Lenovo Yoga S940 looks and feels expensive, rich, as it was intended by engineers. With the assembly, of course, everything is fine.

How convenient is it to use a laptop?

</ img>

The hinge in the Lenovo Yoga S940 is very good:Of course, it allows you to open the laptop with one hand, the display does not wobble, and holds well in the required position. There is also something reminiscent of the feeling of an auto-close when closing the laptop. You can open approximately 145°. The keyboard is typical of Lenovo laptops, both in the recognizable curves at the bottom of the buttons and in the layout. Long Shift, one-story Enter, the top row of function buttons is reduced in height, the arrow block is not separated from the main one, and the down and up arrows are reduced in height. Home, End, PgUp, PgDn are combined with arrows. The power button is separated from the keyboard unit, it is thin, oblong, and is located in the upper right corner:

</ img>

Due to the small thickness of the laptop, the keys movealso small: about 1 mm. The pressures are generally informative, but the first day still goes into getting used to such a short stroke. There is a white backlight with two brightness levels. It is uniform, all characters are visible very well.

</ img>

The touchpad in the Lenovo Yoga S940 laptop is not a record one,but its average size is compensated by excellent sensitivity and coverage. During use, there was no desire or need to connect the mouse.

</ img>

How good is the screen?

Lenovo Yoga S940 has a 14-inchIPS display with a resolution of 1920x1080 and protective glass, they promise a maximum brightness of 400 cd/m². Top configurations have 4K matrices with support for the VESA DisplayHDR 400 standard and a maximum brightness of 500 cd/m². The screen is of very high quality, with excellent viewing angles, a very rich picture and very impressive brightness. The only minor complaint is the use of glass for the sake of aesthetics. Yes, it’s beautiful, but there’s a fair amount of glare.

</ img>

According to the measurement results, the maximum brightnesswas 393.689 cd/m², which practically corresponds to the declared 400. The brightness of the black field is 0.346 cd/m2, and the static contrast is 1138:1. At the same time, the screen is very sensibly calibrated and deviations from the reference values are minimal:

What about performance, autonomy and sound?

</ img>

Any exotic in terms of“hardware” Yoga S940 does not: the typical configuration of a modern ultrabook. Our configuration uses a Whiskey Lake family processor with integrated Intel Core i5-8265U graphics. This is a 14nm quad-core processor with support for 8 HyperThreading threads, 6 MB SmartCache. Clock frequency - 1.6 GHz (up to 3.9 GHz Turbo Boost). The integrated Intel UHD Graphics 620 chip with a frequency of up to 1100 MHz is responsible for the graphics. I do not exclude that updated configurations on 10th generation Intel processors are on the way, although if it is Comet Lake, the difference will be minimal. RAM - 16 GB, LPDDR-2133 is used. Wireless interfaces: Wi-Fi 802.11 AC (2×2) and Bluetooth 5.0.

We have already seen laptops with a similar configurationcarriage and small cart. There are no revelations in terms of performance, everything is familiar: for “office” There are enough applications. It is comfortable to work with documents, mail, instant messengers, and a browser. Basic image editing in Photoshop is also no problem. The results in the benchmarks are corresponding:

The drive used is a 512 GB NVMe PCIe Gen3 x4 SSD. This is Samsung PM981:

</ img>

The drive works very quickly. Read speed is just over 3550 MB/s, and write speed is about 1900 MB/s:

I was very pleased with the cooling system of the laptop. Both for its efficiency and quiet operation. The AIDA64 stress test showed that at maximum load the system temperature first rises to 64°, and after adaptation of the cooling system it remains at 60°. Of course, there can be no talk of any throttling. The case gets a little warm above the keyboard. At the same time, the CO remains quiet, almost inaudible:

</ img>

The ultrabook has a 52 Wh battery. They promise up to 15 hours of operation (for a model with 4K this figure is 10 hours), the fast charging function is supported from the included 65 W power supply. In typical work mode, with a constant Wi-Fi connection and using Chrome with a bunch of tabs, Photoshop and playing music through headphones, the laptop lasts about 7 hours. Not bad, but there are competitors that can withstand a whole working day.

</ img>

Laptop audio system with Dolby Atmos supportsounds quite convincing considering the dimensions of the laptop. The speakers do not “wheeze” even at maximum volume, and even something similar to low frequencies can be traced. More than enough for movies and videos. There is a corresponding application for configuration:

In addition to the above-mentioned Glance software for working withThere is also an IR camera and the Vantage application, which is standard for all Lenovo laptops. The application displays the current state of the laptop (including antiviruses), driver updates, power settings, cooling system operation and other useful things:

In the dry residue

Lenovo Yoga S940 is positioned as a fashion modelan ultraportable laptop and it fully justifies its “status”. It looks great, is made of quality materials, is beautifully assembled, compact and lightweight. It is equipped with a very high-quality display with a good brightness reserve, not top-end, but quite up-to-date hardware, an effective and very quiet cooling system, a good audio system and convenient controls. Perhaps the only thing missing is full-size ports, which could be forgiven if there was a dock included. The configuration we reviewed is worth45,000 UAHand this is quite the usual price for imageultrabook segment. But the Lenovo Yoga S940 will have to bother: there are competitors on the market who can offer more productive configurations and / or longer battery life for the same money.

 • Stylish metal case and excellent assembly;
