Comet discoverer Gregory Leonard of the Catalina Sky Survey in Tucson saidComets Left Tail
The magical and the amazing are the only onesdescriptions that came to mind when I started looking at images posted online. They had a comet with periodic bursts of activity.
Gregory Leonard, comet discoverer
Even if the comet survived its journeyaround the Sun, it would have been thrown into interstellar space from where it would never return. For the first time in late November, a false alarm was sounded that the comet might be showing signs of stress, in other words, it was collapsing.
Observers are mostly amateur astronomers, who carefully examine these objects began to wonder if the comet was starting to break up. Several signs indicated this—the brightness trend had slowed, the comet's head no longer appeared round, and was changing.

But the comet remained intact. The brightness estimate was affected by moonlight and light pollution. In addition, further analysis of the core showed that it did not decay, although this could not have been predicted at the time.
Perihelion is the point in a planet's orbit closest to the Sun. More generally, it is the point in a celestial object's heliocentric orbit where its distance from the Sun is minimal.
A few weeks before perihelion, the brightness of the cometLeonarda began changing every three to five days. The comet's tail began to show a complex structure, perhaps because pieces broke off from the nucleus, revealing new regions that were then heated by the Sun, Leonard suggested.
The comet reached perihelion on January 3, 2022, about a year after its discovery. Confirmation of the comet's disintegration first came from observer Martin Masek on February 23.
