"We always knew that a microphone on Mars wouldAn important tool for studying the Martian atmosphere, and dust whirlwinds were one of those phenomena that we hoped to capture one day, Murdoch said. “However, it is not easy to actually observe him; it takes careful planning as well as luck.”
Dust devils are swirling swirls of dust that are incredibly common on Mars.For example, it is unclear why dust vortices are abundant in some regions and few in others.Perseverance has detected many vortices where it conducts most of its operations, while NASA's other mission, InSight, has found nothing for an entire year.
Direction of the wind
“Dust whirlwinds usually appear ascharacteristic drop in atmospheric pressure, often coinciding with a sharp change in wind direction,” Murdoch continued. “We knew for sure that we had successfully recorded a dust whirlwind when we saw parallel recordings of pressure, wind and sound data. There is only a 1 in 200 chance of finding such a dust devil with a single microphone recording at noon!”
