Rugged ridges are tectonic features that form in layered basaltic lavas due to

loads and bending of the earth's crust and upper mantle. These tectonic stresses are caused by the planet's internal cooling and subsequent contraction.

Studying the wrinkled ridges, in particular their distribution and orientation, can reveal details of the complex and dynamic geological history of Mars.

ExoMars is a collaborationstate corporation Roscosmos and the European Space Agency. In addition to the 2022 mission, it includes the Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) orbiter, launched in 2016. TGO is already providing important scientific results from its own Russian and European scientific instruments, and is transmitting data from NASA's Curiosity rover and the InSight lander. The module will also transmit data from the ExoMars 2022 mission when it arrives on Mars.

On Mars, the ground test model will also be used to test any complex actions and test any non-standard commands before loading them onto the rover.
