Look at the heart of a spiral galaxy

Spiral galaxy M 61, also known as Messier 61, is located more than 52 million light years away

years from Earth.

The galaxy contains a supermassive black hole, which is 5 million times more massive than our Sun. The structure in the photo is a bright central part and spiral arms.

The Messier 61 galaxy is similar in shape and size to our Milky Way. The captured structure was discovered back in 1779.

In order to take these photographs, astronomers used data from the orbiting Hubble Observatory and the VLT (Very Large Telescope).
