JO201 is one of the jellyfish-like galaxies(jellyfish galaxy), located in the constellation Cetus. Such systems are found inside clusters of galaxies and are distinguished by a gas flow that is pulled by gravitational forces into outer space. These gas streams serve as a region of star formation, as a result, a "tail" of young stars stretches behind jellyfish-like galaxies.
JO201 is a spiral galaxy, pictured hereis located almost in the center of the image. From the arms of the spirals, long spotted trails of star formation regions stretch down like the tentacles of a jellyfish.
These regions extend far beyond the brightdisk of the galaxy. This observation is part of a larger study of the size, mass, and age of star-forming clusters in the tendrils of medusa-like galaxies. The researchers hope that a large number of observations will help explain the reasons for the active formation of stars in such gas flows.
