Look at the photo of the "many-armed" galaxy: this is an unusual merger of several objects

CGCG 396-2 is an unusual galaxy merger that is located approximately 520 million light-years from Earth in the constellation

Orion.

The image was taken using the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) aboard the space observatory.

This photo is one of the most important resultswork of the Galaxy Zoo project. It's a citizen science project in which hundreds of thousands of volunteers have classified galaxies to help scientists solve the global problem of how to sort through massive amounts of data from robotic telescopes.

After a public vote, the most unusual objects from the so-called Galaxy Zoo were selected for Hubble to study them in more detail. CGCG 396-2 is one such facility.

The Galaxy Zoo project was born when astronomers neededover 900,000 galaxies have been classified. So they created a web interface and invited citizen scientists to contribute to this task. As a result, the Galaxy Zoo team was able to gather 100,000 volunteer astronomers in 6 months.
