They have been compared to the frosting of a cupcake. 3D renderings of the obaks were presented by citizen scientist, professional mathematician and software developer Gerald Eichstadt at the Science Congress of Europe 2022 in Granada.
He used data to create the animationJunoCam, visible light cameras aboard NASA's Juno spacecraft, which has been orbiting Jupiter since 2016. It was initially installed on board to attract public attention to the study of the gas giant and its moons. However, citizen scientists who work in collaboration with professional astronomers and the Juno team have proven that JunoCam will help explore the planet.

Visible light intensity data,observed by the camera can be represented as a three-dimensional terrain. The computer animation (above) shows flight over the landscape. He was «collected» from processed image data with a red filter.
Image shows nominal height 13536.3 km above the top of Jupiter's clouds. Typically, brighter cloud tops correlate with higher altitudes, especially when observed in the 890-nanometer methane absorption band. But there are exceptions, mainly caused by the color of the cloud tops and the albedo. Juno scientists are working on a calibration that translates these brightness landscapes into physical models of cloud top heights.
Understanding the relative heights of the pointed pillars within the whorls will help scientists uncover more details about the elements of which they are composed.
