M777 and M109 howitzers will be able to fire new generation XM1128 ammunition

The M777 and M109 artillery mounts will fire new generation 155 mm ammunition, which

primarily focused on Extended Range Cannon Artillery (ERCA) howitzers.

What is known

We are talking about the XM1128 projectile.It is being developed for a new generation of self-propelled artillery mounts and will replace the M795 high-explosive fragmentation projectile, which can hit targets at a distance of up to 14 miles (22.5 km).

XM1128 will have a maximum range of 18.5 miles(almost 30 km). It is expected that in the near future the United States will begin production of new ammunition. Compatibility of the XM1128 with howitzers equipped with 52 caliber barrels was confirmed in tests [of the projectile.

New ammunition compatible with M1156 PrecisionGuidance Kit (PGK). The cost of the precision guidance kit, which was developed by Northrop Grumman, has doubled in recent years and is now approximately $20,000.
