Scientists have embedded tiny magnetic hairs inelastomeric material. Like natural hair, these artificial hairs have raised roots that sit beneath the surface of the e-skin and move when the hair above is touched. Each of these roots is surrounded by a 3D magnetic sensor, allowing the precise position of the root to be tracked in real time. This allows the entire matrix of sensors to register not only the touch on the hair, but also the direction of this touch on the electronic skin.
