Male flies figured out how to mate even when they were rejected

Due to high competition and the predominance of natural selection, male insects have to develop

alternative mating tactics with the female. Scientists have studied one of them.

Japanese biologists observed mating behaviormale scorpion flies in Okayama for six hours in designated feeding areas. The scientists noticed that the predominant behavior pattern in both populations of unsuccessful males was waiting.

There, the males offer food to the female and mate if she favors them. Losers are chased away by stronger opponents.

It turned out that after the defeat the males “sneaked”back to the feeding area and where they hid next to the food offered by the winning male as a mating gift and waited until another female appeared. The losers then offer food to the winners and try to mate again. Of the 28 unsuccessful males who used this tactic, 24 successfully mated.

Scientists confirmed the results of the study in the wild with laboratory experiments.
