Many men lose their Y chromosomes as they age, and this is deadly.

Previously, the Y chromosome was considered genetically empty, since it contains many unnecessary DNA fragments. But it turned out,

that the absence of a Y chromosome can have serious health consequences.

In epidemiological studies, the diseasemLOY has been associated with lower life expectancy and an increased risk of age-related diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer's. Now, according to a new study, the condition may also be linked to impaired cardiac function.

Research team led by Soichi Sano,a cardiovascular expert from the Graduate School of Medicine at Osaka University, studied these features in more detail. In mice, mLOY was found to cause tissue damage that leads to heart failure and is associated with cardiovascular disease.

During the study, the authors useda CRISPR gene editing tool to create mice without Y chromosomes in white blood cells. It turned out that such mice lived less and had increased scarring of the heart - a condition known as cardiac fibrosis, which leads to ossification of the heart tissue and is associated with heart failure.

The authors also found a potential treatment forsuch a state. To do this, they blocked a signaling pathway that was activated in Y-chromosome-deficient mice. The researchers noticed that all the changes were partially reversed.

Men who smoke are three times more likely to lose the Y chromosome in their blood cells than non-smokers.
