Master Yoda was printed from opaque resin. It only took 20 seconds

The new technology can be used in the biomedical industry, for example, to create artificial

arteries.

Back in 2017, the engineers of the Laboratory of AppliedEPFL Photonic Devices (LAPD) have developed a 3D printer capable of creating objects almost instantly. Now, five years later, the team has perfected their technology and method and can create objects from opaque resin - something that has never been possible before.

The EPFL 3D printer is one of the fastest in the world. Most 3D printers apply material layer by layer, but EPFL uses a volumetric method. According to the researchers, they poured the resin into a container and swirled it around.

They then shined light on the container from different angles to harden the resin. This is a very precise method that can create objects at the same resolution as existing 3D printing methods.

Engineered volumetric canuse for objects of almost any shape. The authors decided to test and created a tiny master Yoda. It took them only 20 seconds to make the figurine. Usually this job takes 10 minutes.
