MediaTek Helio G88 and Helio G96: chips for inexpensive smartphones with support for cameras up to 108 MP and without 5G

Taiwanese chipmaker MediaTek has announced two new platforms for low-cost smartphones: Helio G88 and

Helio G96.

What is known

Let's start with the older chip Helio G96.It replaced the Helio G95. The SoC received support for IPS and AMOLED screens with frequencies up to 120 Hz, as well as proprietary graphics acceleration technology HyperEngine 2.0 Lite. The processor was equipped with two powerful Cortex-A76 cores with a frequency of 2.05 GHz and six Cortex-A66 cores. In addition, it received LPDDR4X RAM, UFS 2.2 storage, support for 108-megapixel cameras, a Cat-13 4G LTE WorldMode modem, dual SIM cards with 4G and VoLTE/ViLTE functions, as well as Intelligent Resource Management Engine and Networking Engine modes.

As for the MediaTek Helio G88 chip,it supports screens up to 90Hz and cameras up to 64MP. The SoC comes with eight cores, which include two Cortex-A75 performance cores clocked at up to 2.0 GHz and a Mali-G52 MC2 GPU.

When to expect

Smartphones with new chips on board will appear this year. Unfortunately, MediaTek does not give more precise release dates for new products.
