MediaTek on a roll: entertaining infographics of the chipset market in Q1 2022

For the seventh quarter in a row, MediaTek continues to show stable growth in the mobile chip market, actively

displacing Qualcomm from it - follows from the newreport from Counterpoint Research. In the first quarter of 2022, MediaTek accounted for 38% of shipments, showing growth of about 20% year on year. At the same time, the bulk of the volume came from the Dimensity 700 and 900 series of inexpensive chipsets, while the lion's share of shipments in the case of Qualcomm (30% share) are made up of Snapdragon 700 and 8 series chips. Apple is twice as far behind in volume with 15%, and UniSoC is located very close to it (11%). Samsung got 5% of the market, and the share of HiSilicon from Huawei does not exceed 1%.

Global revenue chart

On the other hand, the revenue diagram illustratesa completely different picture, which speaks of the not-so-bad position of Qualcomm. The fact is that it is she who gets 44% of all revenue from the chipset market, which indicates higher margins on chips. It is followed by Apple with 26% of all money, and MediaTek, which ships the most chips in pieces, receives less than a fifth (19%) of revenue. For the same reason, by the way, Samsung has surpassed UniSoC.

    US Market Shares

But the real drama looms in the chip market inThe United States, where MediaTek closely approached Qualcomm's sales figures: 45% for the first versus 47% for the second. And taking into account the recently introduced Dimensity 1050 with support for American 5G mmWave standards, as well as the increasingly popular Dimensity 8100 and 9000, MediaTek has every chance not only to break into the lead in the US market, but to displace Qualcomm in the premium segment, where it remains dominating at the level of 93%.
