Metamaterial reflectors will double the speed of wireless networks

University of Toronto researchers have shown that metamaterial reflectors can direct light

allowing you to transfer more wireless dataat one frequency. They believe that a property they call "full-duplex non-reciprocity" could double the capacity of all wireless networks. Details of their study appeared in the journal Nature Communications. Scientists note that the technology may appear in 3-5 years.

Metamaterials are synthetic structuresconsisting of building blocks that are shorter than the wavelength of light, so they can manipulate those waves. The material of Canadian scientists consists of repeating elementary cells about 20 millimeters in size. They form a single homogeneous object - a metasurface. It can be used for long wavelengths of light, such as microwaves, which are used to carry cell phone signals or digital data.

New metamaterials allow you to direct andamplify incoming rays. It will be useful in many areas, from medical imaging and solar panels to satellite communications. By adding the ability to direct a reflected beam, the new intelligent metamaterials will speed up wireless connectivity.
