Microsoft curtails development of technology for determining emotions in a person

Microsoft is abandoning its scientifically suspect and ethically dubious

emotion recognition technologies. At least for now. Discuss

Microsoft announced that it plans to withdrawfrom their Azure Face face recognition services, so-called emotion recognition systems. The company will also phase out capabilities that attempt to use artificial intelligence to determine personality attributes such as gender and age.

Microsoft's decision to slow down controversial technologycomes amid a broader review of the company's ethical policies. Natasha Crampton, Microsoft's chief AI officer, said the company's decision was in response to experts who cited a lack of consensus on the definition of "emotion." and concerns about overgeneralizing how AI systems can interpret these emotions.
