MIT astronomers discover record-length radio signal from distant galaxy

Specialists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology were able to detect an unusual signal from

a galaxy far, far away.

What is known

Its peculiarity lies in its duration.If ordinary radio waves of unknown origin last a few milliseconds, then this signal lasted a full three seconds, i.e. 1000 times longer than the average fast radio burst. To date, this is a record.

The source is in a galaxy thatlocated at a distance of 1 billion light years from Earth. This is approximately 9.5 * 1021 km, if anyone is interested. The experts could not determine the source, but they suggest that the signal is emitted by a neutron star. By the way, the signal was called FRB (Fast Radio Bursts) 20191221A.
