Dr. David Heymann, former head of the departmentWHO Emergencies told The Associated Press that the leading theory to explain the spread of the disease is sexual transmission during raves held in Spain and Belgium. Monkeypox has not previously caused large-scale outbreaks outside Africa, where it endemic among animals.
To date, more than 100 have been registeredcases infection with a virus associated with smallpox, with most cases reported in Spain, Portugal and the UK, according to WHO.
"We know that monkeypox can be spread by close contact with affected areas of an infected person, and it appears that sexual contact has now increased this transmission," told David Heymann, infectious disease epidemiologist and WHO advisor.
In Central and West Africa, where monkeypox is endemic, the virus usually spreads from wild animals, including rodents and primates, to humans.
According to the CDC, the majorityReported cases of monkeypox in Europe to date have occurred in men who have had sex with other men. “The nature of the lesions present in some cases suggests transmission of infection during sexual intercourse,” the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) said in a statement.
Any close contact with an infected person, his clothing or bedding can transmit the virus. “Person-to-person transmission occurs through close contact with infectious material from skin lesions of an infected person, through respiratory droplets during prolonged face-to-face contact, and through fomites [contaminated objects],” the ECDC said in a statement.
Most cases so far have been mild, according to the ECDC.
