Morse code replaced with digital characters to modernize optical memory

Morse code has been around since the 1830s. The familiar dot and dash system may seem outdated, given

the amount of information that needs to be collected, archive digitally and receive quickly every day. But the same basic dots and dashes are still used in many optical media to facilitate data storage.

New technology developed by PurdueUniversity, aims to modernize optical digital storage technology. This improvement allows you to store more data and read that data at a faster speed. The study was published in the journalLaser & Photonics Reviews.

Instead of using traditional dots and dashes, scientists encode information at the angular position of tiny antennas, allowing them to store more data per unit area.

“The memory capacity is greatly increased becausethat it is determined only by the resolution of the sensor, with which you can determine the angular position of the antennas, - explains Alexander Kildishev, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at Purdue University College of Engineering. "We map the angles of the antennas to colors and the colors are decoded."

Scientists have created an anisotropic metasurface with the potential for high-density optical storage, dynamic color display, and encryption.

Recall that metasurfaces are a two-dimensional analoguemetamaterials. They are particularly well suited for controlling light because they tend to have less losses than bulk metamaterials and are easier to manufacture.

Metasurface used as a lensfor light is called a metal lens. It has a small size, a flat shape, a thickness not exceeding a micrometer, and is covered with nanostructures in the form of protrusions or holes.

Technology has helped increase space availabilityfor storage in optical digital storage technologies. Not all optical storage media need to be laser-recordable or rewritable. The new development not only allows more information to be stored, but also increases the reading speed.

Metamaterial is a composite material, the properties of which are determined not so much by the properties of its constituent elements as by an artificially created periodic structure.
