Motorola has entered the premium segment with the new flagship Edge and Edge Plus

Motorola today introduced two new flagship smartphones - the Motorola Edge and Edge Plus. The company will compete with them for

a place in the sun in the premium segment of the market, whereshe has not competed since 2016. And the chances of success seem quite high: the top-end Edge Plus has an interesting design and is fully on par with modern flagships, while the base Edge is only slightly behind. But first things first.

What's outside

The first compelling argument for Motorola Edge PlusThere is now a 6.7-inch FHD+ OLED display that wraps around the edges of the smartphone – similar to the “waterfall” display in Oppo and Vivo gadgets. Its refresh rate is 90 Hz. (Edge Plus also has 10-bit), and the aspect ratio is 21:9, which makes the device quite tall. It is noteworthy that the feature with the display angle has not only an aesthetic, but also a practical role. Motorola promises to introduce software features that will take advantage of the new free space. There, unread notifications will be highlighted, the smartphone’s charge will be displayed, and much more, even including new “hotkeys” in games.

Of the other design elements, there is only a cutout"Point" for the front camera and a vertical module for the main camera on the back of the case. As already mentioned, unlike some other flagships, Motorola did not greatly limit the base model. The differences lie in some of the technical characteristics, to which we pass.

Inner world

The Motorola Edge Plus is based on a processorSnapdragon 865, 12 GB DDR5 RAM and 256 GB internal memory, not expandable. Power is provided by a 5000 mAh battery. with support for 18-watt fast charging, 15-watt wireless and reverse charging, in case there is no power bank nearby. The smartphone is also equipped with Sub-6Hz. 5G mmWave processor.

The hardware basis of the basic Motorola Edge isa combination of Snapdragon 765, 4 GB of DDR4 RAM and 128 GB of memory, but expandable. Battery capacity 4500 mAh. Only supports 18W fast charging.

Much attention was also paid to the sound: here and 3.5 mm. a headphone jack, and, as the manufacturer itself reports, the Edge Plus has “the most powerful stereo speakers” from Waves. Both smartphones, by the way, have a water-repellent design and are tested according to the IP68 standard, but it is worth considering that they have not passed official certification.

What are we shooting for

Here Motorola again shows that its devicescorrespond to all modern industry trends. Motorola Edge Plus has a triple camera module, consisting of a main 108 MP sensor with an F 1.8 aperture, an ultra-wide and macro 16 MP (F 2.2), and an 8 MP telephoto (F 2.2). By default, this combination takes a 27-megapixel photo. Interestingly, the company has decided to use an ultra-wide-angle camera for macro photography, which will allow it to focus on objects from a very short distance. Night mode supported.

The regular Edge, of course, is inferior in terms of camera. There is still the same triple module, but with a 64 megapixel sensor at the base. The front camera of both smartphones has a resolution of 25 megapixels with aperture 2.0.

How much they ask

There are some questions regarding the sales policy. For the Motorola Edge Plus you will have to pay $999 and this is a normal price for a flagship, however, it will only be available for purchase in the USA and Canada, which is a rather strange decision. It seems that the company does not want to take unnecessary risks. As for the base Motorola Edge, nothing is known. They will tell us more about him in the summer of 2020.

As a result, Motorola's flagship definitely doesn't offersmaller than its competitors Samsung Galaxy S20 and OnePlus 8 Pro, surpassing them in aesthetics. If various technical shortcomings do not surface, then such a “comeback” can be considered quite successful and the device will find its buyers.
