Named a new danger of antidepressants

University of Queensland researchers have discovered a connection between microbial resistance to antibacterial

medications and antidepressants. In a paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, scientists described the effects of 13 antibiotics after exposure to five types of drugs.

Exposing bacteria to largenumber of antidepressants, researchers have discovered an interesting mechanism. When antidepressants were placed in a vessel with bacteria grown in a high-oxygen environment, the chemicals encouraged the pathogens to create reactive oxygen-specific species. It is these molecules that activate the bacterial defense system.

Also, the pumping system of microbes was activatedbacterial efflux system. It is used by most bacteria to remove unwanted molecules. For example, those contained in antibiotics.

The researchers also found that the impactSome antidepressants accelerate mutations of E. coli. This, in turn, affects the process of resistance development. In addition, scientists found that one type of drug triggered gene transfer between cells when exposed to certain bacteria. This is another mechanism for the development of resistance.
