Named a way to reduce appetite without surgery

In a new study, scientists have identified the metabolic benefits of weight loss surgery, including:

its influence on the levelbile acids and the role it plays in the regulation of appetite. Researchers found that those who had weight loss surgery had much lower levels of bile acids. It affects the level of appetite and metabolism.

Studying bile acid levels in a grouppost-surgical patients in Amsterdam, as well as two other non-surgical patients, the researchers found that fiber supplementation naturally lowered their levels.

"Our study showed that dietary fiberalthough to a more modest extent, may mimic some of the effects of bariatric surgery, explains Ana Valdes from the University of Nottingham School of Medicine, co-author of the work. “There may be dietary supplements aimed at increasing satiety and improving liver health.”

Understanding the metabolic mechanisms thatlead to decreased appetite may lead to safe and effective weight loss treatment. Obesity is associated with serious health conditions, including diabetes and heart disease, many of which can be reduced or even reversed through weight loss.

The study was published in the journal Cell Reports Medicine.
