“Our study confirms that all symptomsprolonged COVID-19 cannot be fully explained by lifestyle risk factors or chronic diseases. This question is much broader,” said Shamil Haroun, associate professor of public health at the University of Birmingham and senior author of the study, in a press release for the new paper.
The researchers analyzed anonymous electronic records from the medical records of 2.4 million people in the UK between January 2020 and April 2021.
Scientists have discovered three types of complications thatcan be divided into groups: respiratory symptoms, mental health and cognitive impairment. Among the symptoms are not only well-known ones - anosmia, shortness of breath, chest pain, fever, but also additional ones that scientists have identified - amnesia, apraxia, fecal incontinence, erectile dysfunction, decreased libido, hallucinations, hair loss and swelling of the limbs. Scientists hope to use the research to help patients.
