A recently published meta-analysis covering nearly 300 subjects found certain types of bacteria
Halitosis can be caused by microorganisms in the mouth that produce volatile organic compounds. Scientists tested whether changing a person's oral microbiome had an impact on the situation.
The meta-analysis focuses on studies in whichstudied the effect of probiotics on bad breath. The scientists concluded that Lactobacillus salivarius, Lactobacillus reuteri, Streptococcus salivarius and Weissella cibaria improve the situation by reducing concentration levels of volatile sulfur compounds in the short term. However, they do not affect the main cause of halitosis - dental plaque and coating on the tongue, scientists explain.
Breath-improving bacteria are found in fermented foods such as yogurt, miso soup, pickles, and sourdough bread.
