The recent solar flare "originates" from the solarspot AR 3141, which has grown in size over the past 24 hours. The eruption was classified as M5.2. By comparison, flare classes A, B, and C are low-intensity events, and class X is the highest.
Scientists are still monitoring the sunspot to watch for an increase in activity as it increases. According to EarthSky.org, a coronal mass ejection also occurred in this region of the star.
A solar flare occurs when the energystored in the twisted magnetic fields of the star is suddenly released. This usually occurs where magnetic fields cause temporary disturbances in heat convection.
Therefore, the temperature of these regions decreases intimes. Because of this, areas of the Sun appear darker. Scientists study them in an attempt to predict space weather, which can seriously affect the operation of satellites.
