Virgin Galactic has completed the lengthy process of modernizing its flagship space cruiser.
The company, founded by billionaire Richard Branson, has postponed its first customer mission in 2021 after suspending VSS Unity flights for various improvements.
“Our short-term goal of commercial spaceof operations is to safely conduct repetitive missions with our current ships while providing an unrivaled experience for private astronauts and explorers,” said Virgin Galactic chief executive Michael Colglazier in the company’s fourth-quarter and end-2022 earnings announcement.
Twin-fuselage aircraft carrier VMS Eve VSS Unityflew for the first time since 2021 last month. "Two or three" test flights are planned ahead of the first commercial mission, Kolglazier said. One of them will be an exploratory mission to the edge of space for the Italian air force.
