Named the main cause of lung disease: it is not associated with smoking

A study conducted by scientists from the University of California, San Francisco, proved bad

Sleep quality may have a significant negative impact on advanced lung disease. Even more so than smoking.

The study involved 1,647 people, all of themdoctors confirmed COPD - chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. As of 2019, it is the third leading cause of death worldwide, with 3.23 million deaths. During this period, researchers tracked flare-ups of short-term worsening of symptoms in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) over three years and compared their frequency with self-reported sleep quality data.

The results of the study showed thatInsufficient sleep increases the risk of an exacerbation by up to 95% compared to people who sleep well. Lead study author Aaron Baugh said this explains the WHO data on COPD. According to data, about 90% of deaths from COPD among people over 70 years of age occur in low- and middle-income countries.

“Residents of low-income countries and areas canliving with multiple roommates, or having less comfortable sleeping arrangements, such as on a couch. Or they work with an inconsistent schedule, which leads to sleep disturbances,” the scientist noted. “Research shows that sleep deprivation is associated with a decrease in infection-fighting antibodies and protective cytokines,” he concluded.
