In comparison with tissue samples taken from cognitively healthy people of the same age, significant markers of viral infection and inflammation in the olfactory tract were found in the group of AD patients. Scientists have called it the “major pathway to the hippocampus.”

According to their assessment, the most likely culprits of AD are herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and varicella zoster virus (VZV). Both have already been linked to the progression of Alzheimer's disease and are known to lead to latent, lifelong infections.
