Gravity controls the interaction betweenplanet and its moons, manifesting itself in the form of tides and other effects, such as the slow removal of the natural satellite from the host object. For example, every year the Moon moves away from the Earth by about 3 cm, and its orbit becomes larger. At the same time, every year our planet rotates a little slower. These two effects are directly related: the Earth transfers part of the angular momentum from its rotation to the orbit of the Moon.
If this “compromise” continuedlong enough, eventually, it broke away from the Earth. However, this process will take so long that the Sun will explode long before the Moon manages to “escape.” But around some exoplanets, especially those that are much closer to their stars than the Earth is to the Sun, the situation can develop much faster. New modeling has proven the scientists' idea. Calculations have shown that planets and their “unstable” moons collide within the first billion years after formation. For comparison, the Earth and its Moon are about 4.5 billion years old.
Simulations showed that such “unstable” moons, which moved away from their hosts, often returned by crashing into the planet. This could wipe out any possible life on exoplanets throughout the universe.
