Named the secret to successful hunting of the largest carnivorous dinosaurs in history

Studying the anatomy of spinosaurids is not enough to understand how this animal actually hunted.

A team of paleontologists took a new approach - they studied the density of its bones. Scientists compared the data obtained with other animals - penguins, hippos and alligators.

As a result, they discovered that Spinosaurus andits close relative Baryonyx had dense bones that likely allowed them to dive underwater to hunt. Meanwhile, another related dinosaur, Suchomimus, had lighter bones that made swimming more difficult. Instead, it waded through water or spent more time on land, like other dinosaurs.

Spinosaurus is the largest everdiscovered carnivorous dinosaurs. It's even bigger than a Tyrannosaurus rex. How he hunted has been the subject of debate for decades. Based on its skeleton, some scientists have suggested that Spinosaurus could have swum, but others believe that it simply “wandered” through the water like a heron.
