According to the CDC's preliminary mortality reportfor 2021, COVID-19 is the third leading cause of death in the country for the second year in a row. The data shows COVID-19 was the "principal or contributing cause of death" in 460,513 people last year. This is more than the 384,536 coronavirus-related deaths recorded in 2020.
Overall, the report showed that in 2021 in the United States3,458,697 deaths were reported. Cardiovascular disease continued to be the leading cause of death in the country, accounting for 693,021 deaths, while cancer was in second place with 604,553 deaths.
However, a recent preliminary studyon excess deaths in 2020 and 2021 (those deaths that exceed expected averages) suggests that the CDC's official mortality data likely understates the true impact of COVID-19. The work has yet to be peer-reviewed and published in a journal, but its authors suggest that more than 170,000 deaths in the country between March 2020 and December 2021 may be related to COVID-19 but are not officially reported as such.
