NASA releases photos of asteroid 2006 HV5 approaching Earth

NASA has shared images of an asteroid that made its closest approach to our planet last month.The celestial body is called 2006 HV5.

What is known

The asteroid produced the maximum for the lastcentenary of the approach to the Earth on April 25, 2023. Pictures of 2006 HV5 were obtained using the California GSSR radar measuring 70 meters. With its help, scientists specified the dimensions of the cosmic body, as well as its shape and relief features.

As it became known, the asteroid has a diameter of 300meters, which is 7 meters less than previously thought. It is flattened at the poles and has many elevations. The threat from 2006 HV5 to our planet is still at a low level.

The asteroid is approaching the Earth, then Venus.It makes a revolution around the Sun in 282 days. April 25, 2006 HV5 flew at a distance of 2.4 million km from our planet, which is 6.3 times farther than the distance between the Moon and the Earth.
