NASA is creating a map of coral reefs. But they need the help of volunteers

NASA has changed the mission of some of its devices that originally photographed stars to

exploring the ocean. But scientists need help from volunteers—so the agency created a game in which users analyze 3D images to discover and classify coral reefs. This helps train NASA's supercomputer, which also learns these actions.

The game uses photos taken withusing NASA equipment, which she placed on unmanned aerial vehicles and aircraft. These “liquid lensed” cameras compensate for optical distortions created by ripples and waves of water above the coral reefs, creating a sharper image.

The Ministry of Telecom and Mass Communications obliged Channel One and VKontakte to create versions of sites without video

Players will learn about different types of corals andthen point out where they see the reefs in the 3D rendering. The more people play, the faster the computer’s neural network learns. She must learn to sort photos without human help.

Researchers explained that these ecosystemsare at risk, so it’s important to get a deeper understanding of coral reefs. By creating a map, scientists will be able to find a way to preserve them, despite the damage caused by rising ocean temperatures, environmental pollution and other harmful factors.
