NASA took one of the largest photographs of the moon

NASA's Lucy spacecraft captured a new image of the lunar surface, about 6.5 hours after

how he flew past the Earth. His goal is to perform the first of three gravity maneuvers.

Gravity maneuver - purposefulchange in the trajectory and speed of the flight of a spacecraft under the influence of gravitational fields of celestial bodies. It was first successfully carried out in 1959 by the Soviet automatic interplanetary station Luna-3.

The Lucy probe photographed the Moon while it wasbetween the Earth and its natural satellite, approximately 260,000 km from it. Therefore, the photograph shows that part of the Moon that is already familiar to earthlings. The image shows a section 1,200 km wide. The images show many familiar craters, including the relatively new Artsakhel. To get the image, NASA employees stitched together 10 photographs. Each pixel corresponds to 1.1–1.3 km. The entire mosaic is shown below. It can be viewed in full resolution here. This is one of the largest photographs of the Moon to date.

The photograph was taken using the L’LORRI (Lucy LOng Range Reconnaissance Imager) thermal imager on board the Lucy. The device is operated by staff from the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory.
