NASA's new Mars rover turns out to be less powerful than many smartphones

NASA's Perseverance rover recently landed on the surface of Mars. This scientific machine is worth $ 2.4 billion, but it is less powerful than many smartphones.

The Perseverance rover runs on an old chipsetwhich has almost the same performance as the 1998 iMac, writes Futurism. The rover hardware uses 256 MB of RAM and 2 GB of storage. The processor runs at 200 MHz. By comparison, this system has less processing power than the Apple Watch, which has 512MB of RAM and 8GB of storage, and a 520MHz processor.

It should be understood that NASA prefers to use reliable and proven components. Indeed, in the event of a failure, the rover will not be serviced.

Unmanned aerial vehicle-reconnaissancethe helicopter-type Ingenuity aboard Perseverance also runs on a rather old Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor. This chipset was used in the Samsung Galaxy S5, LG G3 and HTC One M8 smartphones.
